“If it’s possible to become a pop star playing traditional music on bagpipes and recorder, Núñez could be the man,” Los Angeles Times

Prepare to be moved.

If you think Spain is just flamenco, you are about to make a most amazing discovery. A surprising and uplifting musical mélange of ancient Celtic roots and modern Spanish energy is just part of what is embodied in the multi-talented Carlos Núñez.

Few pop stars pack the energy, virtuosity, imagination, daring, and charisma into their concerts this Galician multi-instrumentalist. He is the world’s most famous player of the gaita, the bagpipes of Galicia, Spain’s northwest Atlantic region rich in vibrant, uniquely expressive Celtic traditional culture and music. Enormously popular across his native Spain and throughout Europe and Latin America, his records regularly attain gold and platinum status, while worldwide he has sold over a million albums.

His music draws ancient and contemporary Celtic influences (with a unique Spanish swing) to Medieval and Baroque, and also borrows from the sounds and styles of the places where Galicians have settled, including Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, even the United States.

Carlos Núñez’s instrumental arsenal also includes the ocarina, assorted whistles, Scottish highland pipes, uilleann (Irish) pipes, bombarde (a kind of Breton oboe), biniou koz (Breton bagpipes), and pastoral pipes (18th-century precursor of the uilleann pipes). This impressive panoply of instruments, alongside the incredible array of diversity and talent with his band–provides Carlos and his audiences with a variety of textures matched to that of his repertoire.

Dubbed “the seventh Chieftain” by Paddy Moloney of The Chieftains, with whom he played early in his career, Carlos is well-known for high-profile collaborations reflective of his stated mission to foster an international Celtic brotherhood through music. Such collaborations have included Linda Ronstadt, Los Lobos, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Waterboys frontman Mike Scott, Sinéad O’Connor, and many internationally-renowned symphony orchestras—to name but a few. Fittingly, alongside him will appear guest performances by top Canadian professional pipers and dancers in this exhilarating show.
