Rosalind Picard will discuss the latest advances in the rapidly developing field of robotic emotional intelligence, describing how computers are now able to measure and respond to our emotions and feelings, and the implications of these new technologies for human health and well-being.

From autism, anxiety and depression to deep brain activity, memory consolidation and epilepsy, emotionally-intelligent computers are transforming the way we live and interact with each other. Picard will peer into the future of this brave new robotic world, examining some of the most important challenges that lie ahead.

Rosalind Picard is founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group at the MIT Media Laboratory, faculty chair of MindHandHeart, cofounder and chief scientist of Empatica, and cofounder of Affectiva. She is known internationally for her pioneering work in the field of Affective Computing, which seeks to create emotionally smart AI technologies in service of better human health and wellbeing.

This event will be moderated by Nora Young, host of the CBC’s Spark. In her show, Young guides Canadians through this dynamic era of technology-led change, and connects listeners’ lives to the big ideas changing the world right now.

This event is brought to you by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of British Columbia.
